Mumbai: A retired excise and customs officer was shot dead by the police on Thursday after he allegedly killed his 16-year-old neighbour.
Harish Marolia, 65, allegedly shot Himani over a dispute about repairs at their building, Saujanya Apartments, in Andheri West. Marolia lived on the third floor and the girl on the floor of the building.
IANS reports Marolia quarreled with Himani’s family in Saujanya Apartments and then reportedly grabbed her in a fit of anger and tried to hold her captive while arguing with his neighbours.
Some building members summoned a passing police patrol, which tried to rescue the girl, said an official from the D.N. Nagar police station.
At this, Marolia reportedly opened fire, killing the teenager and injuring two policemen.
Police retaliated and Marolia was seriously hurt. The injured police officials - identified as Uday Patil and Phalke, both from the D N Nagar police station - have been taken to a nearby hospital while further investigations are on, police said.
