1857 Mutiny hits political roadblock

New Delhi: On the 150th anniversary of the 1857 war of independence, the war of words its generated – though is just beginning.

It was an event that ran into controversy from the word go. The occasion to commemorate 150th years of the first war of independence resulted in a war of words.

And raising the banner of revolt were the MPs of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). They were upset that the Anglo-Sikh war of 1845 had not been recognised.

"How can they disregard other freedom fighters? It’s the politics being played by this government," said SAD MP Tarlochan Singh.

1857 could have well been the year, which had united an otherwise divided India. But 150 years later, every political party wants to bask in the reflected glory of the first war of independence.

That is why the BJP contends that the Congress in its attempt to desaffronise the interpretation of history is actually looking to appropriate the freedom struggle as the legacy on one political party.

"It’s strange how the Congress, which didn’t exist as a party then, says it’s their struggle. They are looking to rewrite history," said Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra.

Looking into the past in the way it suits you. History perhaps, has become the most disputed territory in this country.
