1984 riots: Jasbir Singh alleges CBI pressure

San Francisco: In a latest development in the 1984 riots case - Jasbir Singh, key witness against congress MP Jagdish Tytler, now alleges he is under pressure from the CBI to return to India. The CBI wants Jasbir to testify in Delhi on January 8.

Jasbir Singh wants to testify against Tytler but not in India, as he fears for his safety. He alleges that the CBI is harassing him.

Jasbir Singh says, “The Court has asked CBI to do a video conference or they should come here. Why is Interpol being involved? To put pressure on me to not speak.”

Jasbir Singh was called by Deputy Superintendent Kishore of the CBI soon after his interview to CNN-IBN and asked to contact the CBI office in Delhi.

On December 26, there was another call, asking when he was returning to India. And then a letter on January 2 asking him to depose before the CBI in India on January 8.

His lawyers also insist that Jasbir does not need to physically come to India. They say the CBI can legally record Jasbir's Statement in the US.

Jasbir Singh's counsel Navkiran Singh says, “There are three options for CBI to record Jasbir's statement where some one can do in person, or at Indian Consulate and we are also giving a third option where the hearing can be done in any US court as per Section 166A CRPC So, it is now CBI to decide.”

The lawyers also ask why the CBI is bypassing them and making phone calls and sending letters directly to Jasbir Singh.

Jasbir Singh's New York based attorney Gurpatwant Singh Pannun says, “We feel that this is pressurizing this witness so that they wear him out but they don't come forward and record the statement.”

A Delhi Court had asked the CBI on December 18 to consider recording Jasbir Singh's testimony via video conference. Why is the CBI reluctant to explore such options? There is also perhaps enough evidence in the public domain for the CBI to ask the Court for a fresh trial.
