New Delhi: A Delhi court on Saturday sentenced former telecom minister Sukhram, convicted in the 1996 telecom scam, to five years in jail.

Just minutes after the verdict, Sukhram was attacked by a man in the Rohini courts complex. The incident occurred shortly after Sukhram, who remained out on bail during the 13-year long trial, was taken into custody.

Earlier, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 4 lakh on Sukhram. The court had on Friday found Sukhram, who was the telecom minister in the PV Narasimha government guilty of giving undue favours to a cable company in the 1996 telecom scam.

Sukhram, convicted for taking Rs 3 lakh as bribe to give a lucrative contract to a private firm in 1996, had pleaded for leniency in a Delhi court on grounds of his old age while the CBI called him a 'habitual offender' and sought maximum punishment for him.

86-year-old Sukhram has been held guilty for misusing his official position during his tenure as Telecom Minister in PV Narasimha Rao's Cabinet in giving a contract worth Rs 30 crore to private firm Haryana Telecom Limited (HTL) to supply 3.5 lakh Conductor Kilometers (LCKM) of Polythene Insulated Jelly Filled (PIJF) cables to the telecom department.

He was held guilty under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act of the Indian Penal Code.
