Patna: Chicken sales hit an all time low in Bihar after bird flu struck neighbouring West Bengal. However, the shopkeepers are now using innovative methods to boost sale.
Business is booming at the chicken market in Patna, with traders offering a kilogram of onion free with every kilogram of chicken. The offer to lure customers seems to be working well as the bird flu fear is vanishing fast in Bihar.
"There is no effect of bird flu in bihar, ever since we started the offer to give onions with chicken. Even the sales of onions have tripled,” says Shopkeeper, Mukul.
“When I went home and told everyone that the shopkeepers are giving one kg onion free with one kg chicken, everyone got excited. That is the reason I am standing in line now to buy the chicken and get the free onions,” says customer, Satyendra Kumar.
Customers are flocking back to the chicken shops. However, it is a different picture in the districts bordering West Bengal. Though the bird flu virus is not confirmed yet in Bihar, the government has sounded an alert and started culling operations as a precautionary measure there.
Nonetheless, with such combo offers, the traders are making good profits despite the fear of the spreading virus.
