However, the pungent vegetable can do more than bring tears to your eyes; it can bring music to your ears too.
Two Class 9 students at Bangalore’s Poornaprajna Education Centre have successfully found a way to charge iPods using onions and a popular energy drink.
"Basically, the sports drink Gatored, when we drink it charges our body, we thought somehow we can use the same energy in the drink to charge our iPOds. I took some onions from my mother's kitchen, we made a small hole so that the electrolytes can go inside and react wit the acid and we came to know its charging!" says M Chandrashekhar.
But can anyone try it at home?
We can try it at home, all you need to do is fill a glass with the energy drink and soak the onion for an hour.
Drop one end of your iPod's USB charger into the glass and viola your charger is ready!
It generates a charge that is just enough to run the iPod for an hour. And if it doesn’t work the first time, the inventors say, try and try again.
“We spoilt two USBs in the process. The first one I borrowed from a friend. We were shocked to see the iPOd charging, we kept on charging, removing, charging, removing charging that's the problem. The second one we tried, onion peels went and got stuck inside,” says Student, Poornaprajna Edcation center, Indiranagar branch, Bangalore, C J Ajay.
