Ahmedabad: It was like hellfire on National Highway 8 near Anand on May 14 this year. Thirty-three people, most of them passengers of a CNG-powered Gujarat State Road Transport Corp bus had perished in the fire.

Now, two months later, there is no solace to the families of victims. Distraught relatives of the dead are still making the rounds of the Anand Collectorate, waiting to claim the bodies.

“My brother died in the fire. We still haven’t got his body back from the mortuary,” says a wife of one of the victims, Sunami Macwan.

The sister of another victim, Smita adds, “Its okay if they don't give us the body. At least give us the death certificate."

The bus which was going from Mehsana to Panchmahal, was engulfed in fire after a LPG tanker brushed a truck nearby, giving off sparks. Most passengers died on the spot. The bodies were charred beyond recognition. Only six bodies have been identified and handed over to relatives so far.

"We got the DNA tests done twice. The experts are not able to match the bodies with relatives,” says Collector, Anand, R N Joshi.

But relatives are now losing patience and even venting their anger at the authorities. They are caught in a frustrating struggle at the Collectorate, fighting red tape and their own tears as they wait to perform the last rites of their loved ones.
