2 plan blasts on Republic Day, arrested

New Delhi: In a major catch before the Republic Day, police have arrested two Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami (HUJI) militants and foiled a bid to carry out blasts in the Capital.

Mohammad Amin Wani from Kashmir and Lutuful Rahman from Bangladesh were arrested on January 4, based on specific intelligence.

While Rehman was arrested from Azadpur Subzi Mandi area with Rs four lakh cash, Wani was arrested from Nizamuddin area following Rehman's interrogation, said a senior police official.

One-an-a-half kilograms of RDX, a detonator and a timer was recovered from his possession, he said.

Their interrogation led to the disclosure of their plot to carry out subversive operations on Republic Day. Details were not disclosed due to 'operations' being conducted following their arrests, the officer added.

Police have stepped up their vigil to thwart possible attacks on Republic Day.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is the chief guest this year.
