Kolkata: Forward Bloc, the second largest partner in the ruling Left Front government, has called for a bandh in West Bengal on Wednesday after police killed two of its supporters in Coochbehar district.

Police fired upon Forward Bloc activists in Dinhata town while they were protesting against the government’s economic policies.

"Two Forward Bloc supporters are dead while two others are seriously injured at Dinhata. The police had to resort to firing after they were attacked by the party's unruly supporters and baton-charge and teargas failed," Inspector General of Police (North Bengal) R S Nawla told news agency IANS.

"The party’s supporters broke through police cordon and injured cops," Nawla said. He added that several people were injured and were taken to hospitals.

PTI reports 12 policemen were injured when Forward Bloc threw stones at them near the sub-divisional officer’s office in Dinhata, a traditional stronghold of the party.

Nalwa alleged Forward Bloc supporters tried to ransack the office and set fire to a police vehicle.

The Trinamool Congress, the Congress and the Socialist Unity Centre of India will support the Forward Bloc in the bandh.
