Srinagar: The peaceful Jhelum is a raging river, flowing ten feet above the danger mark. And after four days of rain, even the Chenab river in Jammu is flowing eight feet over the danger mark.

The Srinagar-Jammu and the Srinagar-Leh highway is closed and hundreds of vehicles carrying essential commodities are stranded.

With temperatures dropping in the higher reaches, it could mean an early winter this year.

Dehradun Meteorological Department Director Anand Prakash Sharma says, “We have recently observed snow fall activity. The main reason behind this activity is western disturbances.”

Authorities have already sounded red alert in Kashmir. On Sunday, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad called an emergency meet to review relief operations.

People are being evacuated from the low lying areas and an army camp is submerged in Lasjan area.

A resident Sharjeel Ahmed says, “We are having a really tough time. People can't come out of their houses. The roads are blocked but the government has not helped us at all here.”

Kashmir divisional commissioner, Basharat Ahmed Dar says, ”Situation is grim. We are evacuating people from the low-lying areas. We are requesting people to be on alert.”

While six people have been reported killed in a house collapse in the Kathua district, more that 2,000 people are stranded at several places. In Akhnoor, 40 families were evacuated from Gujral village in Khor block.

The rain gods continue to be unrelenting in Kashmir Valley.
