New Delhi: Gujarat's Director General of Police, P C Pandey has been removed from his post a little over a month before he was due to retire.

The Supreme Court turned down Gujarat Government's appeal seeking a six-month extension for Pandey as well as Ahmedabad Police Commissioner O P Mathur, both scheduled to retire on March 31.

The Election Commission had ordered Pandey's transfer ahead of the December 2007 Assembly polls because of his alleged proximity to the ruling party.

However, the Narendra Modi government, after the polls had immediately reinstated him to the post of DGP.

Pandey, a 1972-batch IPS officer, was the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner during the 2002 post-Godhra riots. The city was one of the worst affected cities in Gujarat.

He was appointed DGP in 2006 after he was repatriated from the Central deputation.
