2006, year of the Indian superhero

New Delhi: When you mix images of a booming economy and cutting edge technology with the aspirations of more than a billion people, expect the unexpected.

India's clout in the world grew manifold, the bull run spurred investors to dream on and Indian consumption levels soared. So how could Indian heroes remain human?

Men start flying like rockets ala Hrithik Roshan in Krrish, take great leaps from miles above the ground as in Dhoom and run at a supersonic speed, like Shah Rukh Khan in Don

Men become heroes and heroes become superheroes.

With the great Indian appetite for consumption growing by the hour, the Indians' ambitions going through the roof, fantastic larger-than-life heroes on the silver screen seemed to be very apt.

With a bit of toning up, shaving and airbrushing of the bare torsos, these superheroes did what the ordinary Indian could only dream of, and since it was open season, even those long forgotten were given their due share.

But if there was mortal combat for the superhero of the year, it's unlikely that any of these reel-life superheroes would match up to their two real-life equivalents.

Special effects had no role to play in the heroic runs of child prodigy Buddhia. On any given day and any given road, this barefoot wonder from the Orissa could give the filmy superheroes a run for their money - in air, on land and in water.

But without a shade of doubt, the title of the uncrowned prince of all superheroes goes to the little boy from Kurukshetra - Prince.

Clad not in a superhero's costume - in fact in nothing but his birthday suit - the six-year-old fought for his life 50-feet under the ground and captured the emotions of a country that paradoxically still believes that at the end of the day, all superheroes are mere puppets in the hands of the powers that be.
