Boy suffers from rare disorder: Help him

Kolkata: Twenty-year-old Abhishek Bansal is suffering from a rare intestinal condition. He needs Rs 10 crore for an intestine transplant. This treatment is not available in India and he needs to go to the US for it.

Abhishek's family has gone from pillar to post asking for help but they haven't received any help till date. Now, they are fast losing hope.

“I pray to God that he sends a remedy to my problem soon or he just gives me death. It is better to die than to live such a life,” Abhishek said.

Abhishek is suffering from visceral myopathy, a rare disorder in which the intestine stops functioning. He has not been able to eat or drink and his bodyweight has come down from 38 kilogram to just 14 kilogram.

To stay alive he needs an intestine transplant from a Pittsburg-based hospital in the US at a cost of about Rs 10 crore.

Visceral myopathy is a rare condition where the duodenum is dilated and the muscles don't function normally which affects the movement of digestive waste material through the intestines.

Gastroenterologist Dr Bhaskar Bikash Pal explained, “The intestine gets bloated or ballooned up. When the patient takes food, it is not properly propelled so it is not absorbed.”

But Abhishek’s mother Sashi Bansal is not giving up hope yet. “I can’t see my son in such pain. This is a battle for life and death. My son is fighting for his life and we will fight along with him,” she said.

The transplant would give him about 80 per cent chances of survival. But his family cannot afford this amount. It cannot even afford the Rs 4,000 needed everyday for his treatment.

His family members have appealed to several authorities, from the West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for help. But with no response coming in, they are now writing to President Pratibha Patil to allow him euthanasia.
