Jamshedpur: Twenty-four people were hospitalised following chlorine gas leak from a water filter plant of Tata Motors unit in Jamshedpur on Tuesday.
Nearly 100 people were affected by the gas leak, however the situation is under control, according to SP Jamshedpur Navin Kumar Singh.
”There were a total of three cylinders that leaked. Two have been fixed by technicians and they are working on the third one,” Sign told CNN-IBN
People from the affected area have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
According to the company's Assistant General Manager Capt P J Singh, chlorine gas leaked from the filter plant on Tuesday afternoon.
"Some people had breathing difficulties as the plant is situated near a residential colony. There is nothing serious now," Singh told PTI.
Later in a statement, Tata Motors said the chlorine leak has been plugged and about 60-70 residents who reported breathing difficulty have been admitted to the Tata Motors hospital in Jamshedpur.
Meanwhile, all hospitals, including Tata Main Hospital and government-run M G M Hospital, have been alerted and doctors and para-medical staff told to be prepared to attend to patients, if necessary.
Deputy Chief Minister Sudhir Mahto has directed the East Singhbhum district administration to probe the gas leak.
Alleging that the gas leak was caused due to "negligence" on the part of Tata Motors, Mahto said quoting an official that the "gas cylinder was left abandoned in the company premises after the technology being followed in the plant by the company became obsolete about 15-16 years back."
The company official assured him of stringent action against the persons responsible for the incident, the Deputy Chief Minister said.
