Srinagar: Terrorists hurled a hand grenade on Saturday at a police patrol in Kashmir, wounding at least 35 people, eight of them seriously, the police said.

Of the injured, at least three were Border Security Personnel police said.

The grenade was thrown at a Maruti Gypsy belonging to the Force's 45 battalion at around 1245 hrs IST that had stopped in a busy market in Sopore, a town about 50 kilometers north of state capital Srinagar, local police chief Viplav Kumar said.

The battalion is headquartered at Sopore.

Three officers and at least 32 civilians were hurt in the blast, Kumar said. Eight of the civilians were in serious condition and had been taken to Srinagar for treatment, he said.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the entire area and launched a search operation to nab the terrorists.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

About a dozen Islamic terror groups have been fighting since 1989 for the independence of Muslim-majority Kashmir from India.

Nearly 68,000 people, most of them civilians, have died in the conflict.
