26/11: Modi rakes up controversy with remarks

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: BJP's anti terror mascot, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, is now finding himself in a spot for taking his image too seriously. A week after he stirred a controversy by stating that the Mumbai terror strikes had local involvement, he is now on the defensive.

"I was only saying that there must have been some reconaissance," Modi stated in his defence on Wednesday.

But the explanation is not finding too many takers. The Congress, always on the defensive so far on the terror debate, is now only to happy to be giving befitting answers to Modi.

Home Minister P Chidambaram said, "I am not aware of any such thing. You should ask him (Modi) if he knows."

During the last Parliament session, it was the statement made by senior Cabinet minister, A R Antulay, which had left the Government red faced and now as a new session is about to begin, it's the Opposition which has stirred a hornet's nest.

Antulay's comments on slain Anti-Terrorism Squad chief, Hemant Karkare, and a suspicion on who his assasins were had disrupted most of the previous session. Now the BJP is planning to rake up that controvery to deflect any embarrassment on Modi's statements.

BJP Spokesperson, Prakash Javadekar said, "It's Antulay who has weakened India's position."

The last session of the UPA in power in Parliament promises to be as stormy as any other during its tenure.
