New Delhi: In a jail break in the Dantewada prison in Chhattisgarh, 299 of the 377 inmates have broken out of the jail.
Police say the jail break was orchestrated by undertrials housed in the prison, who were helped by people firing from outside.
"The inmates attacked and overwhelmed the prison guards during lunch time. They apparently they took advantage of weak security. We will launch an investigation. We are sending search parties to the region. There's difficulty in communicating with people on ground," said Chhattisarh Home minister Ramvichar Netam to CNN-IBN.
The inmates escaped at around 4:45 Sunday evening around the time when they were having food. Around 50 of them are suspected Naxalites. Additional police forces have been rushed to the prison.
There was firing for about 15-20 minutes in which two supporters and three jawans were injured and the rest managed to escape, PTI reports.
Officials said a massive search operation was launched and the injured shifted the hospital.
Officials said the jails had 105 inmates, who were put behind the bars with the banned Maxal outfit CPI (Maoists) and one of them overpowered a prison guard and fired fired shots from his weapon injuring two guards and an inmate.
