New Delhi: After A Raja and Kanimozhi, Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhai Maran has become the latest target of the BJP in the 2G scam following the allegations that he favoured Singapore based company Maxis Communication.

Based on reports on the Tehelka Magazine, the BJP has demanded that he should respond to allegations that he deliberately delayed licences when he was the telecom minister in 2006 to benefit Aircel promoters Maxis, which in turn invested over Rs 600 crore in companies owned by the Maran family's Sun Group.

"Mr Dayanidhi Maran please explain - has the Maxis Communication made any investment in the Sun DTH Direct company. If the foreign investor of Aircel invested in any company of Sun Group when Mr Dayanidhi Maran was the telecom minister, then is it a case of conflict of interest of not?" said BJP spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad.

Maran's role as telecom minister was earlier questioned in the justice Shivraj Patil report. The report observed that he had deviated from procedures.

The latest allegations come a day after reports that Maran met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the issue.

The CBI meanwhile has told CNN-IBN that the agency is also actively investigating the transactions in the telecom ministry between 2001 and 2007.

Maran though remains defiant and has sent a legal notice to the Tehelka Magazine stating the report as baseless.

The Congress, however, has distanced itself from the controversy.

"Maran is the best person to answer to the allegations. Meanwhile, JPC is looking into the alleged irregularities in allotment of 2G," said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari.

Maran is the grand Nephew of DMK Chief Karunanidhi and is believed to have a fierce rivalry with Kanimozhi the jailed daughter of the DMK chief. The allegations against him come ahead of the proposed cabinet reshuffle raising question over whether the Textiles Minister will be the next DMK victim in a scam that hits the party hard.
