Mumbai: A two-year-long ordeal finally ended for the families of 12 Indian diamond traders who were held in China on charges of smuggling as the traders returned home on Thursday night. Families and friends welcomed them with sweets and gifts at the Mumbai airport.

Indian trader Samir Shah's father Arvind Shah said, "It's Diwali for us today."

The relative of a trader Khyati said, "Today every person from the smallest to the eldest is here to just welcome him."

It was an emotional homecoming for families of the diamond traders but they hope no one faces this emotional trauma.

Trader Parth Shah's brother Suket Shah said, "The past two years have been traumatic. I hope no one else ever has to go through what we experienced."

Trader Jigar Mehta's father Praful Mehta said, "It was a difficult phase and now it has passed."

The families, however, claim the men were treated well in China, were even given vegetarian food and were allowed to be visited by relatives every three months. Relieved to be reunited, no one wants to dwell on the charges of smuggling, choosing to shrug it off as a misunderstanding instead.

The ordeal may be over for these 12 traders, but 9 others who remain in China have been sentenced to further imprisonment. For them the nightmare has only just begun.
