Click to play videoMumbai: Three men who threw grenades at the Fishermen’s Colony in Mumbai during the 1993 serial blasts in the city were on Tuesday given death sentence by a special court.
Zakir Hussain Shaikh, Feroz Mallik and Abdul Akhtar Khan were given death for their active involvement in the conspiracy and killing three persons in Fishermen’s Colony in Mahim. The TADA court also found them guilty of a attending weapons training in Pakistan for the blasts.
Accused number 43 Moin Qureshi was given life imprisonment and not death, as he was a was a minor during the blasts. The court said Shaikh, Mallik and Khan deserved death because they had waged war on the country.
“The court has observed that the accused were no just involved in terrorist activity but their actions qualify and are fit to be termed as waging the war on the nation,” said Special Public Prosecutor Ujwal Nikam.
Minutes after the death sentence was pronounced, the three convicts accused started shouting slogans and threatened the prosecution. “They started shouting slogans and created a ruckus but the court immediately took them into custody,” said Nikam.
Farooque Pawale, who planted bombs at the Air India headquarters and Sena Bhavan, is likely to be sentenced when the court reconvenes on Wednesday.
