Chief Minister Mayawati on Sunday transferred three senior police officers in charge of supervising the investigation. The transferred officers are Gurdarshan Singh, Inspector General (IG) of Meerut Range, P C Meena, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), and A Satish Ganesh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Noida.
Sources tell CNN-IBN the officers were transferred because the murder probe was not supervised properly.
Mayawati said she was transferring the officers to aid the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) probe into the double murder. The CBI on Sunday took over the probe after the UP Police was accused of shoddy investigation.
"I do not want anyone to accuse the police and the state government of standing in the way of the investigations," said Mayawati in Lucknow. "I want the truth to be out in the case."
"My government does not want that police officials connected with the case be accused of trying to botch it up and projecting their own probe as correct," she said.
Mayawati said the UP Police probe had "revealed some very important facts".
The Chief Minister announced that Gyan Singh is the new IG of Meerut Zone, P V Rama Shastri the DIG and R K Chaturvedi is the new SSP of Noida.
The UP Police have earned severe criticism for their probe into the murders. Aarushi, 14, was found murdered on May 16 in her Noida home.
Hemraj, who was initially suspected of the crime, was found dead a day later on the terrace of the Talwar’s home.
The Noida police arrested Arushi’s father, dentist Rajesh Talwar, for the murders eight days later, saying he first killed the servant and then his daughter after finding them together May 15 night in close quarters "but not compromising position".
The police also said Rajesh killed Arushi because she had come to know of his extra-marital affair with a colleague and had threatened to expose him.
Police statements on Arushi and their allegation that Rajesh had found her in a “compromising position” with Hemraj have enraged women and child rights group.
