New Delhi: Since India’s breakthrough Olympic at Beijing last year, the corporate have clearly woken up to the idea of supporting sports other than cricket. The main sponsor of the Indian cricket team, Sahara, has taken a step forward and has promised support to the boxers and wrestlers.
For the first time the country's wrestlers and boxers were seen in the all-too-familiar blue jersey.
“I am happy I am wearing the blue jersey,” says wrestler Sushil Kumar. He won a bronze medal in Olympic last year.
“Sahara sponsors cricket team. Now we will also reach great heights with Sahara,” adds boxer Vijender Kumar. He also won a bronze in Olympic last year.
The sponsors of the Indian cricket team, Sahara has taken 30 wrestlers and boxers under their wing. They also aim to help the Federations in developing infrastructure in their main academy.
“Boxing and wrestling should now reach to small places also. People should be enthusiastic in participating and guardians should be enthusiastic in sending their children for participating in this discipline,” says Sahara Chairman, Subrata Roy.
For those still striving for that medal, this move comes as an incentive to perform consistently and succeed.
“We will also win medals and show our worth,” says wrestler Rajeev Shikara.
“If this sponsorship had come earlier we would have done better at Beijing. Now we are looking ahead to Commonwealth 2010,” adds Sushil.
With the Commonwealth Games in front of home supporters just over a year away, any help these sportspersons can get will surely go a long way.
