New Delhi: Thirty-four years in jail and now Prabhunath is finally free.

Arrested in 1974 on charges of illegally trying to cross over to Pakistan would have got him only a two-year sentence, but his files were lost during the trial and he stayed on behind bars.

The police recently retrieved Prabhunath’s file while searching for other files. The matter was brought to court and he was freed----after 34 years in jail.

Says Sub-Inspector,Rajasthan Police, Chandan Kumar, “Our senior officials have asked us to free him and so we have done the same."

Over the years, Prabhunath’s mental condition has deteriorated and he is unable to recount his exact address so police are finding it hard to trace his home.

“He gave us his name and his father’s too now he has no recollection of that information,” says Kumar.

Jail records show that he is from the Etala village in Eastern UP's Basti district.

But Basti has now split into three parts and the police station mentioned in his address does not exist.

A seven-member police team from Rajasthan is now in Uttar Pradesh to help trace Prabhunath's home.

“We have asked locals for help but no one can identify him,” says Station Superintendent, Etawah, AK Tiwari.

The team has now reached Etawah believing that Prabhunath may have pronounced the name of his village wrong.

They hope there will be someone who can provide information on his family.
