36 statues in Parliament & counting

New Delhi: Speaker Somnath Chatterjee says that statues are a reminder to Parliamentarians of the ideals of democracy and history and in keeping with his words, 36 statues are being erected in Parliament.

The question is, do these mute statues make MPs behave or are they as helpless as the Speaker is to maintain decorum in the House?

Winning a seat to Parliament may be tough, but for statues, it's becoming much easier to get in.

To get a more than five-year-term in Parliament, all a statue needs to do is find a sponsor, usually a private trust. Even an MP would do.

Two cases in point are the statues of Sri Aurobindo and Swami Vivekanand, which were inuagurated on Wednesday and sponsored by ex-MP L M Singhvi .

And these are not all. There are more waiting statues waiting for a coveted place in Parliament.

Now Jayalalithaa may not be in Congress's good books, but her mentor and former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M G Ramachandran is waiting to be unveiled.

In queue also are former DMK leader and union minister, Murosoli Maran and former home minister and CPI general secretary Inderjit Gupta.

In the era of delimitation, statues and portraits, fortunately, do not have to fight for constituency and poll tickets.

And the irony of things is that statues, though they need a lot of money to be installed, once in place, they do not lead to wastage of precious time and recurring daily expenses.
