Bodeli (Gujarat): About 15 girls from a village, all students of Class 8 and 9 were heading for their exams to their school early on Wednesday morning in Bamroli village.
They only became among the 41 students who all died while taking the state transport bus to their school as the bus plunged into a Narmada canal.
"No one helped for two hours after the accident, what could the villagers do? The bus had sunk into the canal,” says a resident, Raman Bhai.
The administration's rescue effort, say locals, started only two hours after the accident, but by that time it was too late to save the children.
For example 14-year-old Renuka’s parents don't know how to make sense of her death.
“We have lost our daughter who do we blame?” says a parent Purshottam Baria.
The government has appointed a three-man committee to investigate the accident and has announced a Rs 1 lakh payment for families of the dead. However, that will be of little real consolation.
