4,100 arrested Indian workers in Dubai let off

New Delhi: The 4,100 Indian workers in Dubai who had been arrested on charges of vandalism were released on Wednesday afternoon.

The workers had been striking for better pay in the Jebel Ali industrial area when the arrests took place.

The protesters were demanding wages higher than the current Dh 600, better living conditions and transport facilities.

The workers were hit by appreciating rupee, high cost of living and low pay which reduced their savings to almost nothing.

According to reports, the Indian Government may negotiate with the Gulf countries regarding minimum wage for workers to find a permanent solution to the problem.

The workers are expected to resume work soon. Indian Embassy officials say they are trying to get another 400 arrested Indians released by Thursday.

Embassy officials say the workers who wish to remain in the UAE have been asked to give written undertakings that they will not indulge in illegal activities.
