New Delhi: It is not just the election heat that is bothering candidates in Orissa, it is also the abnormally high temperatures.
Orissa is now experiencing a searing heat wave with temperatures touching 45 degrees in some areas.
Many candidates like Alok Jena find it difficult to keep energy levels up till the end of the day.
Congress MLA candidate Alok Jena, Bhubaneswar-central said, "Its very difficult to campaign in the heat, but I have to reach out to voters. The voters give us cold drinks and curd at several places to beat the heat."
The 77 assembly and 11 Lok Sabha seats that goes to the second phase polls on the April 23 are in areas where the heat wave is worst and people are dying of sunstroke. The Meteorology department says the sudden spike in temperatures is due to a cyclonic disturbance.
Director, Meteorology, Bhubaneswar L D P Roy said, "Due to the cyclonic storm 'Bijli' that moved towards Bangladesh this heat is felt...today also Bhubaneswar has recorded 48 degrees and this could carry on for 48 hours."
There is already very low turn out for the election meetings and there could be a low turn out for the polls as well as the heat wave is expected to last till April 23.
