Girl rescued from borewell after 22 hours

Jaipur: Five-year-old Anju, who fell into a 50 feet borewell on Saturday evening, was pulled out after a long tedious rescue operation by the district administration and police.

Anju from Bandikui's Moradi village fell into a 50 feet borewell in her father's farm on Saturday.

It took coordinated effort of five JCB machines and rescue teams including the emergency response team to save the girl. Anju has been admitted to a Jaipur hospital.

“The child’s condition is stable now. She has a fever and dehydration. It will take some time for he to recover fully,” says Dr Hari Mohan Gupta.

At 1530 hrs IST on Saturday, Anju fell in the uncovered borewell while playing in her father's farm.

After two hours the police and district officials reached the site. The administration took six hours to assemble the necessary equipment and began the rescue operation.

The villagers roughed up the officials for causing delay but Anju’s respond put their worst fears to rest.

At around 19:30 an oxygen pipe, some biscuits and water were lowered into the borewell.

Since the opening of the borewell was narrow the rescue team dug a forty five feet parallel pit and later a horizontal tunnel. This part required careful maneuvering and took the longest time. What worried everyone in the meantime was the fact that Anju showed no movement from 0700 hrs till she was rescued at around 1300 hrs IST.

“It is only by God’s grace that Anju was saved. We didn’t do anything,” says Anju’s uncle Ranglal Gujjar.

Anju has been fortunate like five-year-old Prince from Haryana who fell in a borewell in July 2006 and was successfully rescued in time. But the fact is that these open borewells are emerging as a matter of concern because not every child is as fortunate as Anju and Prince.
