Mumbai: Once again the Marathis versus North Indians issue its rearing its ugly head, the attacks of North Indians continue in Mumbai.
Four men on motorcycles pelted stones at five taxi drivers and damaged their vehicles in the narrow bylanes of Lower Parel and Worli on Friday night.
"They asked if we were Marathi or North Indian, and then started throwing stones,” say taxi drivers, Iqbal/ Rajiv Singh.
The incident brings to focus the fear and insecurity in the minds of North Indian taxi drivers in the city.
The police have detained the four accused. They are residents of Worli.
It is however, not yet confirmed whether the four are affiliated to any political party this considering Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirmal Sena has been spitting venom against North Indian migrants in the city for some time now.
"We rounded up the four boys on motorcycles and will investigate who is behind the attack,” says police inspector, Jayant Kale.
In February, the state government had provided compensation and promised adequate security to taxi drivers after the Bombay Taxi Union called a strike following an attack on their office.
This latest incident only raises questions on the government's promises.
