City Health Officer P Kuganantham and four others, including a statistics officer have been suspended by the government and the Chennai Corporation, respectively, for dereliction of duty and carelessness, Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan told Express.
Statistics officer Mohamman Sali Fathullah Sheriff, zone-11 sanitary inspectors S Selvarani and Martin D Porus and zone-8 deputy health inspector Moses have been suspended by the Corporation Commissioner.
The civic body’s death registry attributed 29 deaths in the city to cholera, when most had died due to cardiac arrest.
Pooja Kulkarni, joint commissioner (health) who was incharge of the investigation said, “We referred to the original medical report and found that the causes of death were actually cardiac arrests, chronic liver disease, and so on. Based on that, they were suspended.”
