6 arrested in connection to UP youth lynching

Mumbai: The Mumbai police have arrested 6 people in connection with the Khopoli lynching case on Thursday.

Dharamdev Rai, 25, was allegedly lynched by Marathi speaking youths in a Mumbai train while he was going back home on Tuesday.

Additional Director General of Police (GRP) KP Raghuvanshi says, "We have arrested six men today and they have been remanded to police custody until November 3."

As a precautionary measure, the government has now decided to deploy 2500 GRP personnel on trains all across Maharashtra to avoid such incidents from recurring.

However, all this appears to be a case of too little too late for North Indians in the state who seem to be gripped by fear.

Taxi Driver Siraj Khan say, "Now-a-days, I can never be sure I'll get back home unharmed in the evening."

"Being a Mumbaikar was a unique identity, but now suddenly we have 'others'. We are making our neighbours realise they are from elsewhere," says filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.

Whether it's a north Indian commuter, a small shop owner or a taxi driver, in today's times a north Indian in Mumbai has fear written across his face.

They are living with a constant fear of becoming a soft target in the political crossfire over the sons of the soil issue.
