New Delhi: It’s not often that you get to see about 50 works of FN Souza all under one roof. The Dhoomimal Art Gallery is showcasing works from the director's personal collection, not for sale, but the focus this time is on rare, unseen Souza canvases from the 1980s and 90s. If you are familiar with Souza's inimitable style, you will find these works as dark and as grotesque but these are less stressful with his brush strokes failing to show his charactersistic force.
The show is on till mid September but if you miss it, it's the book on Souza by Francis Newton that you need to get your hands on, giving you every possible minute detail on Souza's career.
It is by far the most detailed compilation of Souza's illustrious career, taking you through 6 decades of not just his works, but his poetry, his quotes, and also the controversies which were often part of Souza's life by design. His friends Jatin Das and Krishen Khanna have talked about their special memories with Souza. There's also Indira Gandhi caught admiring some Souza's from a 70s show. And a surprise mention of installation artist Subodh Gupta who had once as a student, sketched out the master at work.
But here's why Souza will always be celebrated as the enfant terrible in Indian art. He once said "I remember painting murals on the walls of my mother's womb". The book is available at Dhoomimal art gallery for 5500 rupees.
