Hyderabad: Junior doctors across the country are on a strike as a protest against the Union government’s move to increase the duration of the MBBS course. The extension of the course includes a one-year compulsory rural service.
Doctors in Hyderabad are protesting but for a different reason.
Padma wants to find out the reason why her two-year-old son is dead. Even tough she brought him to Andhra Pradesh’s biggest government-run children’s hospital, her son/daughter is one of the four children who died in the hospital on Monday.
Just like Padma, all the dead children’s parents’ blame the flash strike called by the doctors.
The doctors deny the charge but justify their strike called after a Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA assaulted a lady doctor in the hospital.
“We are there 24 hours for the sake of the patients. But the thing is they ask their roadside tried to assault on a lady doctor. This shall not be excused until action is taken against them,” says president, student’s Union, G Raju.
The MLA was arrested but later released on bail. The doctors want him to be charged with attempt to rape otherwise they have threatened to continue with their strike.
The hospital however, insists that the services have not been affected because of the strike.
“Only the Post graduate doctors are on strike. The regular doctors are not. The regular doctors can handle the situation,” says Hospital Superintendent, Narsimha Rao.
However, even senior doctors are threatening to join the strike if the MLA is not charged with attempt to rape.
Ironically, the hospital is preparing for a groundbreaking surgery to operate on a six-year-old child who has three limbs and two pelvic girdles and the hospital authorities say the absence of junior doctors will be affect this.
