Ludhiana: A portion of a factory building collapsed at Jodhan near Ludhiana on Friday claiming six lives and injuring over a dozen people.
According to an eyewitness, 28 workers were working in the spinning mill when a tin shed fell on them. The injured were immediately rushed to Ludhiana's Oswal and Civil Hospitals. The police is investigating into the cause of the accident.
"In the spinning factory, it fell, how it fell (no idea), everyone inside got buried.
"There were 28 people. Right now, there is no information of who all have been taken out. Here I saw two to three persons," said Gagandeep, an eyewitness.
Police officials confirmed the death of six people and apprehended the toll may rise.
"According to the figures of the Civil Hospital, six people have been brought here, and the injured are being treated at the Oswal hospital and the Civil Hospital. This mishap took place near Jodhan," said Gursharan Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ludhiana Rural Range, Jagraon.
Meanwhile investigations have commenced to ascertain the cause of the mishap. Flouting building norms and erecting unsafe structures is rampant in cities across India.
