New Delhi: On Tuesday morning, six school children were admitted in Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital in Mayur Vihar Phase 2 as their vehicle was hit by a speeding car.

The Maruti van which ferries the children to their school, Rajkiya Kanya Sarvodya Vidyalaya in Kondli, was hit by a speeding Tavera.

Across the town, in West Delhi, five school children are pulled out of a mini van with serious injuries after their vehicle overturned.

These incidents come close on the heels of last week's accident in which 25 school children were injured and a parent was killed.

“It is not the children but the drivers who are at fault,” said a parent, Prathiba Bisht.

Incidentally, none of the vehicles involved in these accidents were following the Supreme Court guidelines for School Buses issued in 1997.

The SC had said that:

*All school buses should have speed governors and their maximum speed can't exceed 40 kilometres per hour.

*Drivers of school buses should have five years' experience.

* The four top corners of the bus to have amber lights.

* The bus should not carry more than one and half times its capacity

and that a school representative, either a teacher or an attendant, must be on the bus.

Most of the school buses are vehicles hired on contract by schools and many more are hired by parents themselves. The question is do they meet these guidelines at all?

“If the state government can provide buses to carry the children, it will be of great relief to all the principals,” said Principal of Apeejay School, Noida.

As road safety rules continue to be flouted, school children in Delhi are at risk.
