6 women die in hospital, MP CM faces the heat

Bhopal: Six women have died within 15 hours in a government hospital meant for women and children in the capital of Madhya Pradesh.

According to Sultania Hospital, four of the victims were pregnant and one of them was brought dead.

All were referred from other hospitals and had expected better care at the Sultania Hospital.

But it was only the number of victims and within such a short time that brought to light the terrible functioning of the hospital. Even now authorities are silent on why the women died while the relatives are distraught.

"The staff are still misbehaving. No one is bothered no medicines are being issued," said Amar, a relative of one the dead woman.

"I came to the hospital with my child but nothing happened. No one is willing to check him," said relative of another woman, Ruksana.

So far, the state government has ordered the removal of the Medical Secretary.

Seen as a major embarrassment, the hospital has completely gagged its staff against talking about the deaths.

The state women's commission is seeking a report of all the deaths within seven days. But the total lack of facilities in the hospital stares at every patient and visitor.

"This is a 90-bed hospital but that day 235 patients were there and the infrastructure and staff was not adequate," claimed Upma Rai, Member, State Women Commission.

Dubbed the uncle of all Madhya Pradesh girls, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan has been spending crores every year on his pet women welfare schemes Ladli Lakshmi Yojana and Janani Suraksha Yojana which are supposed to take care of women right from birth, well into motherhood.

With six women dead under such circumstances in the capital itself, serious questions arise on the reach of these schemes in the rural areas of the state.
