Afzal becomes poll issue in Gujarat

New Delhi: Six years after the attack on Parliament, Mohammad Afzal Guru issue is still hanging fire, heating up politics in the backdrop of the ongoing Gujarat Assembly elections.

Three days before the second round of polling in the state, BJP has brought out advertisements in Gujarat, attacking the Congress stand on Afzal death penalty.

The conspirators of the attack on Parliament are still to be punished, say the ads. Afzal, whose clemency plea is pending with the President, was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2004.

But human rights groups and political parties in Kashmir claim the trial was flawed and have been demanding that the sentence not be carried out.

Earlier this week, following a comment on the issue by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Afzal is entitled to the due process of law like everyone else.

“Let the rule of law take its course,” the Prime Minister said while talking to reporters after addressing a public meeting here.

Narendra Modi had, in one of his election speeches, said Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru should be handed over to Gujarat so that “we can hang him.”

Meanwhile, family members of the nine security personnel and a Parliament staffer killed in the attack are boycotting the commemoration function in Parliament House premises to be held on Thursday.
