Tokyo: A strong earthquake hit northern Japan on Thursday, but no damage was immediately reported.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said the magnitude 6.1 quake struck early in the evening south of the main northern island of Hokkaido. No damage or injuries have been reported, and the agency did not issue a tsunami warning.

The quake hit about 750 kilometers (465 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

Thousands of quakes have shaken Japan since the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami devastated the northeast coast in March. About 20,000 people died and damage at a Fukushima nuclear plant caused meltdowns and radiation leaks.

Japan lies on the "Ring of Fire" - an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones around the Pacific Rim where about 90 per cent of the world's quakes occur.
