Kolkata: A crude bomb exploded near the Tata Motors` small car project site in Singur while the police recovered seven other explosive devices from the site on Sunday creating panic in the area.

The police were called in by workers after a crude bomb exploded near the Gopalnagar-Bosepukur area, next to the boundary wall of the project site. Nobody was injured in the blast, but news of the explosion led to some panic at the site.

The police have not arrested anyone yet, but they have cordoned off the area and security has been intensified.

The explosion occurred in the early hours of the day. The blast damaged a part of the wall. When the police were informed, they rushed to the spot with bomb disposal squad and found seven "bomb-like" objects, Hooghly SP Supratim Sarkar said.

He said the entire area has been cordoned off to avoid any untoward incident. IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said initial investigation revealed that an explosion of a crude bomb damaged a part of the wall of the project site and caused panic among workers.

"It is yet to be identified as to who is responsible for the explosion. This is simply a crude bomb and not anything like landmine or similar such explosive," Kanojia said, adding that no arrest had been made in this regard.

The work on the small car project, which has faced agitation against land acquisition, has already started a couple of months back and over the last few days the work at the site had picked up with nearly 1,000 workers joining work at the main plant.
