Mumbai: Two years past any big tragedy and the stories are usually about life moving on, about survivors learning to live again and families learning to cope with the grief of those who didn't make it. But for two families in Mumbai, time seems to have stood still since July 11, 2006.
Twenty-four-year-old Amit Singh has been in a partial coma since the train blasts and even though the doctors have given up hope, his father Dinesh Singh cannot accept that nothing more can be done.
A single senseless act of terror has left all four members of the Singh family in a limbo. For the last two years, their days have revolved around being with Amit in the hospital and managing work and home in the little time left - not even a few seconds left to actually live.
Dinesh Singh says, "Bas aspatal aur ghar - humari zindagi mein ab aur kucch nahi bacha hai. Koi dost nahi, koi khushiya nahi." (Hospital and home - that is all that is left in our lives. There are no friends, no happiness.")
But despite the superhuman strength required to keep talking to their son knowing he may never reply, Amit's parents aren't ready to give in just yet.
Dinesh Singh says, "Humko toh lagta hai ki kucch response de raha hai. Kucch ho sakta hai to acchha hoga." ("We think that he is giving some kind of a response. Something may happen for the good.")
A similar hope keeps the family of Parag Sawant going. He too has been in a coma since the blasts. And his little daughter Prachitee who was born soon after 7/11 has never played in her father's lap.
Parag's wife Priti has never shared the joy of becoming a parent with her husband. But even then, Priti puts up a brave front. The family believes Parag's condition is improving.
"Woh abhi mummy ko pehchante hai. Maths ke sums bhi kabhi karte hai." (He recognises mummy and sometimes is able to solve maths sums as well.")
Both Amit and Parag's hospital bills have been fully paid by the railways, but what they need more than ever is a solution - either life changing medical treatment abroad or a way to take them home with assured financial assistance.
