Ahmedabad: At least eight people were killed and 12 suffered serious injuries, when a three-storey Shakunt Hotel near Kalupur railway station in Ahmedabad collapsed on Sunday morning. The foundation of another building was being laid and digging was taking place around the hotel.
"The hotel should not keep guests when the building is not safe. Will they do it with their own children,” asks Bhanumati Modi, mother of Pradeep, who lost his life in the tragic incident.
Located opposite the railway station, the building was constructed in 1985. Local officials say the foundation of a new building coming up next to Shakunt hotel was dug so deep that it weakened its base. However, owners of both buildings are now under the scanner.
"We have lodged a complaint against both persons. We will take action,” says Commissioner, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation IP Gautam.
The state government says it will hold an inquiry. It has announced that it will give Rs one lakh as compensation to the families of those killed.
"We will find the real reason and punish those responsible,” says MoS Home, Gujarat, Amit Shah.
This tragedy is a result of callousness not only on the part of the hotel owners, but also the administration.
