New Delhi: The CBI has finally told a Delhi Court that it has tracked down key witness, Jasbeer Singh in the 1984 riots case.
On November 29, 2007, barely an hour after the CBI filed an affidavit in the court, saying the main witness against former minister Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case cannot be found, CNN-IBN tracked down Jasbeer Singh.
“Jagdish Tytler was inciting the mob to kill. My family is under threat,” Jasbeer had said.
The interview nailed the CBI's lie that no witness or evidence against Tytler existed.
On Thursday CBI finally told the court it has managed to speak to Jasbeer and now there is a chance he may depose as a witness.
"If you don’t file a supporting report under law you can’t record the testimony of a witness,” says Jasbeer’s lawyer, Navikaran Singh.
The riot victims meanwhile continued their protests outside the Karkardooma court complex.
They allege the CBI is not serious about getting Jasbeer's testimony since it has not asked the court's permission to reinvestigate the case after filing the closure report three months back.
"The court has asked the CBI to reply by December18 if Jasbeer can depose via video conferencing,” says lawyer for riot victims, H S Phulka.
If the CBI does not seek reinvestigation even on December 18, the next day of hearing, then it will be up to the court to order a reinvestigation on its own.
Twenty-three years later and the victims are still struggling for justice and now all eyes are at the court to see whether the key witness is allowed to depose or not.
