Goa: Thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to Goa every year to relax on the beaches. But the 105 km long coastline has only nine lifeguards.
A few months ago 70 life guards went on strike for they wanted their services to be regularised, but their demands were not met.
The Government has as of now not recruited new lifeguards, though the recruitment process is on.
Says MD Goa Tourism Development Corporation Sanjeet Rodrigues, "Tourist season has begun in full earnest. The beaches are crowded and the recruitment process of professional life guards will take another month or so. We have plans to recruit 100 lifeguards and five supervisors who will look after the entire coastline of Goa."
However, as there are currently just nine lifeguards, they are finding it difficult to monitor the coastline with the constant influx of tourists - 60,000 to 70,000 tourists every year.
Says a lifeguard Sadguru Naik, "Everything is managed by the nine of us. There are lot of tourists coming in and some are troublemakers. We can't maintain everything with the present strength."
It is clear now that it will take another month or so to appoint a sufficient number of lifeguards to guard the Goan coastline and this seriously puts the the 70,000 plus tourists who visit Goa every year at risk.
