Mumbai: The designated TADA court for the 1993 Mumbai blasts case on Tuesday pronounced five policemen guilty for their role in the blasts. It’s the first conviction of government officials.
The convicted policemen include Vijay Krishna Patil, former sub-Inspector at the Srivardhan police station. Patil intercepted the vehicle carrying the explosives at the Gondgha check post – and allowed it to continue its journey to Mumbai.
Special public prosecutor, advocate Ujjwal Nikam said: "On the midnight of January 9, 1993 a truck loaded came to Shekhadi, the truck was allowed to go ahead without checking and he had taken bribe of Rs 7 lakh."
On January 9, 1993 a truck loaded with AK 56 assault rifles, magazines, and pistols arrived at Dighi in Raigad and was moving towards Mumbai when the vehicle was intercepted at Ghondgar Phata by then police sub inspector V K Patil.
The vehicle was escorted by a jeep driven by a customs officer Jaywant Gurav accompanied by Uttam Poddar an accused in the current case.
There was an exchange of words between V K Patil and the truck driver along with Uttam Poddar.
V K Patil demanded a bribe of Rs 7 lakh for himself and his constables who were on duty with him. Due of lack of cash three silver bricks are given to Patil to allow the loaded truck to pass.
Bail bonds of those pronounced guilty have been cancelled with immediate effect.
All those convicted in the blast case so far have had direct links with either Dawood or Tiger Memon. But in this case which can clearly be seen as loss of face for the police force is simply because of the fact that the officers chose to indulge into corruption out of sheer greed.
