Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Sunday expelled Mohammad Azam Khan, one of the party founders and its Muslim face, from its primary membership for alleged indiscipline and anti-party activities. Khan has been expelled from the party for six years.

The expelled SP leader took a dig at the SP's leadership and said only a man of standing, and not a broker can ask him to leave.

"Only a person which has a significant political background has the right to demand resignation from me, koi dalal nahi (not a broker) who runs on black money," Khan said .

He had earlier resigned as party General Secretary and from the party's Parliamentary Board. This after differences with the top leadership Mulayam Singh Yadav and General Secretary Amar Singh over Jaya Prada and Kalyan Singh.

However, Amar Singh has denied having anything to do with Khan's ouster. " I don't know what he's been accused of, I don't have anything to do with this," he said.

SP state president Shivpal Singh Yadav spoke about Khan's expulsion, he said it is due to his anti-party activities that he was expelled. "He has been doing anti-party work for two years, we have been asking him to come to party meetings, but he didn't come so we decided to suspend him," he said.

Earlier, Khan had actively campaigned against Jaya Prada who later won from the Rampur seat. The infighting in the party had touched a new low in the run-up to the elections with Jaya Prada alleging that Khan had distributed her morphed pictures in the nude.
