Tral: Misra Bano's brother, Mohammad Amin Naik — Major General Naik — is the first Kashmiri Muslim to achieve such a high post in the Indian Army. However, for Misra Bano he is still the little boy she used to play with years ago.

"We are of the same age, we studied together in Dadsara village till third standard. He always wanted to be in Army," says she with pride.

Major General Mohmmad Amin Naik's journey started from the dusty and sleepy village of Dadsara. The desire to do well in life took him first to Srinagar and then to Pune where he studied further.

He was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers in 1974 and was awarded the Sena Medal in 1993.

Tjough Major General Naik is currently posted as the Assistant Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff in Delhi, hundreds of miles away, the Naik household and his village, Tral, is celebrating.

His uncle, Ghulam Hassan Naik says, "He wanted to join the Navy, because he said that he wanted to roam the world."

A village elder recalls that Major General Naik used to be overweight as a youngster. "When he decided he wanted to join the Army, he realised he would have to lose weight to get selected and for that he would cycle from Dadsara to Srinagar daily."

From the apple orchards of Tral to the upper ranks of the Army, Major General Naik's journey has been a historic one. For the children of his native village he has become a hero in whose footsteps they all want to follow.
