New Delhi: It was 43-year-old Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma's 76th encounter all was going according to plan till he was hit. Not once, not twice but four times. He was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries at the operating table. He lived by the bullet and died by it.
Leader of the Opposition, L K Advani said, "I had come to congratulate a brave inspector of the Delhi Police. I didn't know that I would be paying my last respects to a very brave man who fought terrorists."
In his 19 years of being with the police forced, this special cell encounter specialist was credited with killing 35 terrorists and arresting at least 80 others.
Inspector Sharma was one of the closest lieutenants of ACP Rajbir Singh, the man responsible for converting the Special Cell into a crack anti-terror unit. He was credited with creating an impressive network of informers and had been decorated with seven gallantry awards, had received at least 150 commendations as well as other awards.
Home Minister, Shivraj Patil said, "He is a martyr and the entire country is grateful to him for the sacrifice that he has made."
As the Delhi Police mourn the death of one it's bravest men, Sharma's family is inconsolable and a grateful nation joins them in their hour of grief.
