A joyride that cost them big

New Delhi: It's not a security breach. There was no forced entry. It's not a case of drunken driving.

It was an evening where a group of three youngsters just decided to hang out together, drive on a cloudy night in a big car, maybe enjoy a few drinks in a bar and then drive straight to the Prime Minister's residence, the most protected house in the country.

So when Yogita, Veena and Imran drove past the first gate of the heavily-guarded residence of PM Manmohan Singh late Thursday evening, it was probably just for a lark.

The Prime Minister's Office went on the defensive and denied that a breach of security had taken place.

But there were contradictions too. The Delhi police had arrested the three on charges of criminal tresspassing and impersonation though they have now been granted bail.

The three were medically tested to see if they were under the influence of alcohol but the tests were negative.

Air Sahara, which employed the two girls, has now terminated their service.

Parents of the two girls involved were called from Jaipur to take custody of their wards.

"A case has been registered under Section 447 and 419. We are now investigating the case," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, Anand Mohan.

But legal experts say though there is a case for impersonation as one of the trio had claimed she was related to the PM, charges of criminal trespassing don't hold water.

"No case of criminal trespass can be made against them because there was no forced entry. They can only charge them with impersonation," an advocate, Gautam Kumar, explained.

The maximum punishment in the case of impersonation is imprisonment of up to three years and a fine.

For criminal trespassing, the maximum imprisonment is up to three months or a fine of Rs 500 or both.

Though it would be interesting to see what would happen to them now, the real question that remains is how did they get past the first layer of security and get so close the PM's residence?

Ironically, all this happened while a Cabinet committee meeting on security issues was taking place at the PM's residence.
