Udaipur: A multi-purpose vehicle for Rs 45 lakh with a Mercedes star – that’s the new Viano for you. The question is who in India will put down that sort of money for a vehicle that could double up as a mobile boardroom or a high end in city luxury cab?
The Viano is already in use in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. Available in diesel option with a 2.2 litre engine, this van has eight seats that can be rearranged according to user convenience.
“The Viano is being used for special applications and tourist and tour operations right now,” says MD, Mercedes Benz India, Wilfried Aulbur.
What this car definitely has is abundance of space. In fact one can walk in around inside and change seating positions without having to get down.
This van has a sliding track mechanism so one can choose legroom space according to one's need. Apart from the space, the dash and center console is well laid out.
Compared to the traditional Mercedes saloon, there is a lot more noise in the cabin of the Viano especially from the engine that needs to be pushed quite hard to offer any meaningful performance.
But as one speeds, things calm down and it is a reasonable motorway cruiser.
While it may score in the looks and utility department, it may not find many takers in a market where MPV's like the Toyota Innova come for under Rs 10 lakh.
But with incomes and market caps rising, Mercedes may just get lucky.
