Madhepura: It's been a month since the river of sorrow unleashed its fury on Bihar, affecting millions of lives. 18th Aug will go down in the history of Bihar as black Monday.

The day the Kosi barrage was breached and the water rushed in causing unimaginable devastation. Hundreds of villages are destroyed and .millions displaced. That day still haunts the survivors.

According to official figures, 142 persons have died so far. But the real death toll could be much higher.

More than 1 million people are still marooned and over three lakh others are living in relief camps as refugees in their own state.

The state administration says it is doing all it can to deal with the aftermath of the crisis.

“Medicines have been have been provided. I visited a relief camp they don't have clothes to wear so I've issued instructions that they be given clothes,” says, Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar.

But looking at the desperate conditions of the victims in the weeks after the floods, belie the state government's promises. The centre now admits that the relief work need to be faster.

“Of the 1.25 lakh metric tonnes of wheat and rice given for aid by the Centre, the Bihar government has only picked up 20,700 metric tonnes in the past month. We need to work quicker,” says Union Minister of state for Food and Civil supplies, Akhilesh Singh.

Money for aid efforts has been pouring in ever since the floods. But what needs to be seen is how the government utilises it to meet the challenges of rehabilitation and reconstruction.
